The Lego Batman Movie

Movie Rating: Geoffrey Crété

Great villains tremble at the sight of Batman, the superhero who brings order to Gotham City. But what happens once his enemies are all arrested and locked up in Arkham's Asylum? Nothing, or almost nothing. He leads a solitary life in his huge manor with Alfred: watching movies, eating and having childish fun. When the Joker decides to fill the gap left by the bad guys, and Barbara Gordon, daughter of the commissioner, attacks the status of superheroes like him, Batman finally finds a good reason to leave the Bat Cave...

The Lego Movie was a surprise hit in 2014. On the one hand because the animated film was funny and smart, and on the other because of the blatant product placement (even as it criticized the blandness of society) that was disconcertingly accepted by audiences. Producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller (directors of 21 Jump Street and recent newcomer to the Star Wars universe) lend their touch to this Batman adventure: a lot of action, jokes, and an irreverent tone that gently mocks the superhero genre with a plethora of nods to pop culture. Although not as fresh or charming as the previous movie, this one is still very entertaining.
