Winna - Weg der Seelen
In the mountains of the Valais, legends and myths surround the procession of the dead, with many inhabitants having had encounters with the deceased. This folkloric tradition, told by local storytellers and mystics, is slowly being lost. Director Fabienne Mathier tracks down these inhabitants to hear their stories among the alps and valleys of the region.
A look at life after death through myths and legends in a region of Switzerland born of tradition: the idea behind Fabienne Mathier’s documentary – her debut film – is beautiful and intriguing. In the beginning, anyway. The documentary, comprised as it is of regular interviews intercut with gorgeous alpine scenes, quickly becomes too straightforward and classic. Fabienne Mathier listens to her subjects without questioning or judging them, these witnesses of confirmed or imaginary phenomena that are all more or less strange (noises, apparitions, impressions, certainties); but this is also because she remains nothing more than a discrete spectator of the events that make Winna, Weg der Seelen a movie of no great breadth.
