When a sharpshooter mows down five apparently unconnected people in Pittsburgh with seemingly no motive, the evidence points to James Barr (Joseph Sikora). But instead of confessing to police, he asks for Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise), a former military cop, who helps defense attorney Helen Rodin (Rosamunde Pike) with her investigation. This leads to several crooks and a Russian with a German accent (Werner Herzog)...

One of the highlights of this movie is a classic car chase through the streets of downtown Pittsburgh reminiscent of Bullitt, with Tom Cruise behind the wheel of a red, pimped up Camaro. Christopher McQuarry, who won the 1996 Oscar for his screenplay for The Usual Suspects, also directs. But in contrast to The Usual Suspects, the result is a stereotypical thriller with an unorthodox cast – which in this case is not a compliment.
